Thank you to Lynn Flewelling for interviewing me as a guest author on her blog: Talk in the Shadows!  Come find out what writer I would most like to hug, why my writing process is like playing in the dirt, and how my parents discovered I was doomed…er, destined to be an author!

    Welcome to Authorial Voice!

    Monday, May 3rd, 2010

If you’re interested in writing fiction, reading genre-bending literature, talking about creativity, or just making fun of the absurdity of the world, you’ve come to the right place!

By day, I’m a clinical child psychologist and a professor of psychology working in the “middle of the mitten” in Michigan.  I teach undergraduate and graduate students, conduct treatment research, and run a clinic for families with young children with behavior disorders.  As a professor and a researcher, my overarching goal is to develop ways for more families in need of help to access effective treatment for mental illness.

In the wee hours of the night, I become a writer of fiction.  My first novel, SHORN, book one of The Sky Seekers is a psychological fantasy about a young soldier struggling to survive in a society that calls him evil, and a woman seeking to save her people, though the people themselves have stripped her of power.  Book two of The Sky Seekers, CAEL’S SHADOW, will be released next spring.  For a long while, I had to keep my writing something of a guilty secret.  Now that my first novel is published, however, the enchantment is broken: I’m free to speak about my creative moonlighting and explore the craft.  And that’s what this blog is meant to be: an exploration of the creative process in all its glorious and terrifying aspects.

I have to admit that I’ve always been wary of blogging – primarily because of the time it steals from my other projects.  So, Authorial Voice will be an experiment.  I’m going to give myself a year to see what I might learn from the process and what I might contribute.

I’m excited to say I will not be alone here!  Other authors and artists have already generously volunteered to share commentary about their own creative processes through interviews on this blog.  My first guest blogger will be LYNN FLEWELLING, author of The Tamir Trilogy (The Bone Doll’s Twin, The Hidden Warrior, The Oracle’s Queen) and the ongoing Nightrunner Series (Luck in the ShadowsShadows Return).  Lynn has intriguing things to say about writing fiction and about the fantasy genre in particular.  You may be surprised by her comments about her forthcoming novel, The White Road, which will be released this month!

Come by again to see how this experiment goes!  This week you’ll find Lynn Flewelling’s interview, next week comments on the fabulous Coyote Con: A 31 Day Author Conference.  I look forward to some interesting discussion!
